Project preparation

A practical residential fence planning checklist

A useful fence plan connects the desired layout with boundaries, access, utilities, local rules, material choices, and the way the property is actually used.

Before drawing

  1. Identify the reason for the fence: privacy, pets, pool safety, appearance, security, or boundary definition.
  2. Find available surveys, plats, easement information, and HOA documents.
  3. Note slopes, retaining walls, trees, drainage paths, utilities, and tight access.

While planning the layout

  1. Mark corners and transitions where material or height changes.
  2. Place gates around daily movement, equipment width, vehicle access, and swing clearance.
  3. Compare at least two material options against maintenance and appearance priorities.

Before installation

  1. Confirm boundaries and required setbacks.
  2. Check permit and HOA approval requirements.
  3. Contact 811 before digging and follow local marking instructions.
  4. Review the final scope, payment schedule, warranty, cleanup, and change-order process.

Planning limitation

Put the guidance into a property plan
