Fence pricing

What determines the cost of a residential fence?

Fence cost is driven by the measured layout and the work required at the property, not by material alone. Use a planning range early, then confirm the site with contractors.

Start with measurable quantities

Length, height, post spacing, corners, transitions, and gate openings establish the basic material and labor quantities. A satellite plan can organize those measurements, but contractors still need to verify them in the field.

  • More corners usually mean more terminal posts and layout work.
  • Taller fences use larger posts and more panel or board material.
  • Gates add framing, hardware, stronger posts, and alignment labor.

Site conditions that move a quote

Rock, roots, steep grade, difficult access, demolition, disposal, drainage, retaining walls, and utility conflicts can change an installed quote substantially. These conditions are difficult to price from imagery alone.

How to compare estimates

Compare the same fence specification, footage, gate schedule, demolition scope, finish, permit responsibility, and warranty. A lower total is not directly comparable if posts, rails, hardware, or disposal are omitted.

Planning limitation

Property Improvement Estimator does not replace a survey, utility locate, permit review, engineering advice, product instructions, site inspection, or contractor proposal.

Put the guidance into a property plan

Measure the route, compare materials, and prepare for fence quotes.

Use satellite imagery to create a visual fence plan and a planning cost range before sharing the project with participating contractors.
